Lea Michele is the daughter of Edith Sarfati, a nurse, and Marc Sarfati, a delicatessen owner. Lea Michele grew up in New York City and Tenafly, New Jersey. Lea Michele attended Rockland Country Day School for elementary school in New York and then Tenafly High School. Lea Michele was home schooled one year while working in Toronto, Canada on Ragtime. Lea Michele attended Stagedoor Manor in the Catskills, a center for performing arts training. Lea Michele was then later accepted to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, but Lea Michele opted instead to continue working professionally on the stage.

In her career, Lea Michele at eight years old went with a friend to an open call for a musical, then Lea Michele decided to try out. Lea Michele was offered the part and made her debut on Broadway on 1995 as a replacement in the role of Young Cosette in the New York City production of “Les Misérables”.
